This holiday in our country was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On the Day of Monuments of History and Culture” No. 1062/99 of August 23, 1999. In support of the initiative of scientists, architects, restorers, and employees of state bodies for the protection of historical and cultural monuments, a decision was made to establish a corresponding holiday in Ukraine, which should be celebrated annually on April 18 — the International Day of Monuments and Historical Places.
The International Day of Monuments and Historic Sites was established in 1983 by the Assembly of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), established under UNESCO. The holiday has been celebrated around the world since April 18, 1984. The motto of the International Day of Monuments and Historical Places was the words: “Let’s preserve our historical homeland.” The task of this holiday is to once again remind the world community about the diversity of cultural heritage created by the efforts of many peoples throughout the history of mankind, its vulnerability and the need to preserve it for future generations. The Ukrainian Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Landmarks (ICOMOS) is an advisory body of UNESCO, and together with the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine and the National Commission of UNESCO decides, in particular, which objects to nominate for the World Heritage List. Today, there are 7 objects on the UNESCO World Heritage List from Ukraine: Kyiv: Saint Sophia Cathedral with adjacent monastic buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (since 1990). Ensemble of the historical center of Lviv (since 1998). Struve geodetic arc (since 2005). Beech primeval forests of the Carpathians and ancient beech primeval forests of Germany (since 2007, 2011). Residence of the Metropolitans of Bukovyna and Dalmatia (since 2011).
