In 1910, the city council separated a plot of land from the City Garden, and here, according to the project of the city technician S. L. Sokolovsky, the stone orphanage named after G. E. Churkin was built. The construction and further activities of the orphanage were supervised by the merchant’s widow, Elena Petrovna Churkina, nee Podderegina.
