Location and exterior of the church and bell tower.
The current Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is located in the central part of the city, on the main Kateryninskaya Street, which crosses the entire city in a straight line from the western side of the cathedral church to the easternmost city suburbs. The area on which this church is located with other church buildings located on it is an oblong quadrangle measuring 58 fathoms in length and 25 fathoms in width; the whole is surrounded by a stone fence and constitutes a separate quarter, surrounded on all sides by streets. Initially, this place belonged to a private owner, Lieutenant General Hellin *), then it passed to the state department, from which, at the request of the civil governor Myklashevsky, in 1800 it was purchased with church funds, together with the old wooden buildings located on it **). The stone Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built on this site, built in the Byzantine style, with one wide spheroidal dome, with one gilded dome and the same cross on it. From the outside, it appears cruciform, but this appearance is given to it by the surrounding extensions on three sides, namely: from the west – a bell tower with a porch, and from the south and north also porches, or porticos with columns;
