Transport connection between Kremenchuk and Kryukov in 1870

Транспортне сполучення між Кременчуком та Крюковом у 1870 році

Both banks of the river, Kremenchuk and Kryukov, are connected in the summer by a floating bridge on logs. This bridge is opened for the passage of ships – near the right bank, where the fairway runs – only three times a week: on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The passage of ships and rafts, with a fairly significant current speed and the short time for opening the bridge (4-5 hours), is usually carried out by local pilots: with their own people, due to their inexperience, the shipowners cannot cope and have to wait two days for this. For the passage, the pilots take from 3 to 5 rubles. per barge and raft, depending on their crowding. For the use of the bridge, passers-by pay 8 kopecks per pair of oxen or per horse. For merchants who live in Kremenchuk and have continuous business in Kryukov, this fee is quite burdensome. In spring and autumn, when the bridge is dismantled, the crossing is carried out on ferries towed by a small steamer owned by the city.
