Colonel General Ewald von Kleist (slightly to the right of the center of the photo, standing sideways to the photographer) in Kryukiv on the banks of the Dnieper, September 1941. The Kryukiv railway bridge is visible in the distance. In September 1941, General Kleist commanded the 1st Panzer Group, which was advancing north of Kremenchuk and, joining with Guderian’s 2nd Panzer Group, closed the encirclement for the Soviet troops near Kiev. Later, Kleist fought in the south of the German-Soviet front, at the end of January 1943. received the rank of Field Marshal General, and in March 1944. was dismissed.
